Ariège is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the Pyrenees, and without doubt one of the most unspoilt. Here you quickly leave the crowds behind, among mountain pastures, beech forests, high-altitude lakes and summits that sometimes rise above 2,000 metres. Whether you are after a gentle family walk or a more demanding challenge, the department has enough to keep you busy for a whole season.

I live in Ax-les-Thermes and I roam these mountains whenever I get the chance. Here is a selection of well-known, well-marked hikes, sorted by level. The times and elevation gains I give are rough estimates: always check the exact route and the conditions on the day before you set off, using an IGN map or the local tourist office.

Easy level: family hikes

Ideal with children or for a first outing in the mountains, these walks stay accessible while still offering remarkable scenery.

Lake Bethmale

Tucked away in the Couserans, near Seix and the Bethmale valley, this deep-green lake surrounded by beeches and firs is one of the most photographed spots in the department. The loop around the lake is short and almost flat: perfect for a relaxed outing, a picnic and a few photos. The setting is especially spectacular in autumn, when the deciduous trees turn colour.

The Beille plateau

Above Les Cabannes, in Haute-Ariège, the Beille plateau is best known as a cross-country ski resort in winter. The rest of the year, its vast pastures offer wide trails, open views over the summits and very gentle elevation gain. It is an ideal spot for a family walk, for pushing an all-terrain buggy along the first tracks or for getting into hiking with no technical difficulty.

The Carla lakes

Reachable from the Auzat and Vicdessos area, these small mountain lakes are linked by a family-friendly trail. The walk stays modest and rewards children with the presence of water, often the best motivator to keep them going. As everywhere at altitude, remember to pack a warm layer even in summer.

Intermediate level: keen walker

These routes call for a bit of stamina and some experience of mountain walking, without requiring any particular technical skills.

The Ars waterfall, at Aulus-les-Bains

This is one of the iconic hikes of the Couserans. From Aulus-les-Bains, a steadily climbing trail through the forest leads to the spectacular Ars waterfall, which tumbles down the cliff in several drops. Allow several hours there and back and a significant elevation gain: good footwear and water are essential. The waterfall is at its most powerful during the snowmelt, in spring and early summer.

The Bassiès lakes

In the heart of the massif, in the Vicdessos area, the Bassiès lakes form a group of high-altitude lakes within a magnificent cirque. The climb has to be earned, but the plateau that opens up at the top, with its refuge and shimmering waters, is a fine reward. This is a full-day outing best kept for walkers who are already well trained, ideally in summer when the trails are clear.

Mont Fourcat

A much-loved summit above the valley, between Foix and the Pays d'Olmes, Mont Fourcat offers a 360° panorama in clear weather, over the Ariège plain on one side and the high range on the other. The ascent is long but with no difficult sections. A great local classic for a sunrise or a sporty day out.

Challenging level: summits and long days

Reserved for experienced hikers who are well equipped and attentive to the weather, these routes demand a genuine physical commitment.

Pic des Trois Seigneurs

Rising above 2,100 metres, this summit, reachable in particular from the Tarascon-sur-Ariège area and the valley, is a prime objective. The climb is demanding, but the summit view over the Ariège Pyrenees, all the way to the high border peaks, is unforgettable. Keep it for days of stable, fine weather, as storms can build quickly in the afternoon at altitude.

The high lakes of Haute-Ariège

From the valleys around Ax-les-Thermes and beyond, many routes lead to high-altitude lakes and passes close to the Andorran border. These long days, often with more than 1,000 metres of elevation gain, are for self-sufficient walkers who can read a map and pace their effort. It is well worth it: these are some of the purest landscapes in the Pyrenees.

My practical tips before you set off

Choosing the right season

In Ariège, the high mountains are mostly hiked from June to October, once the snow has melted from the high-altitude trails. Valley-floor and plateau walks remain possible for much of the year. In winter, part of the network can be done on snowshoes, but with heightened vigilance about avalanche risk: check with the professionals.

Getting the gear right

Hiking boots that support the ankle, several layers of clothing, a windproof, plenty of water, snacks, a hat and sunscreen: the basics never change. In the mountains the weather can turn quickly, so even in the middle of summer always carry a warm layer and something to protect you from the rain.

Hiking with the family

With children, it is better to keep it modest and favour routes with a point of interest: a lake, a waterfall, animals grazing in the pastures. Allow plenty of time, take lots of breaks and make the outing a game rather than a performance. Lake Bethmale and the Beille plateau are excellent starting points.

Checking before you go

Check the mountain weather the day before and again that morning, tell someone your route, and check the state of the trails with the tourist offices in the area (Haute-Ariège, Couserans, Pays de Foix). IGN 1:25,000 maps remain the reference for planning your route precisely.
