What to do in Ariège: 30 activity ideas

Ariège is a department that surprises visitors with its variety. Within a relatively small area, you go from high-mountain pastures to gorges carved out by the rivers, and from caves decorated thousands of years ago to the perched castles of Cathar history. Whether you come for a weekend or a week, as a couple, with family or with friends, you will never be short of ideas.

Here are 30 activities sorted by theme. I have deliberately kept the descriptions general: for opening hours, prices and bookings, always refer to the sites' official websites and the tourist offices, as this information changes from one season to the next.

Nature and hiking

This is the heart of Ariège: a mountain territory where nature reigns supreme. Whether you are a casual walker or a seasoned hiker, you will find something to marvel at in every valley.

1. Walk around the Bethmale lake, in the Couserans, one of the most photogenic lakes in the Pyrenees.
2. Climb up to the Ars waterfall from Aulus-les-Bains, one of the finest falls in the massif.
3. Explore the Beille plateau, a vast balcony of high pastures, ideal with the family in summer.
4. Hike up the Pic des Trois Seigneurs for a 360° panorama over the high range, for experienced hikers.
5. Watch mountain wildlife: marmots, izards (Pyrenean chamois) and birds of prey are common in the high valleys.
6. Discover the Orlu National Wildlife Reserve, near Ax-les-Thermes, and its trails.

Whitewater and thrills

Fed by snowmelt, the rivers of Ariège are an ideal playground for thrill-seekers. These activities are always done with a professional guide and suitable equipment; check the required skill levels and current conditions beforehand.

7. Try canyoning in the gorges of the Couserans or the Haute-Ariège, led by a professional.
8. Ride a river by raft in spring, when the water levels are high.
9. Try canoeing or kayaking on the calmer stretches.
10. Swim in a mountain lake or a river (with care, as the water stays cold).
11. Go on a via ferrata, a good middle ground between hiking and safe climbing.
12. Try fishing in a river or lake, a tradition that is very much alive in the department.

Caves and prehistory

Ariège is a major site of European prehistory. Several caves are open to visitors and are well worth the detour.

13. The Niaux cave, near Tarascon-sur-Ariège, famous for its rock paintings (visits by booking only, in limited groups).
14. The Lombrives cave, described as one of the largest developed caves in Europe.
15. The Mas-d'Azil cave, a spectacular natural tunnel crossed by a road and a river, with a landmark prehistoric site.

Ariège carries a rich history, from the Middle Ages to the Cathar epic. Its perched castles and ancient towns tell of centuries of mountain life and deserve to be explored at leisure.

20. Climb up to the Château de Montségur, a key place in Cathar history, for its setting and its exceptional views.

With family and in winter

Ariège lends itself very well to family stays and winter holidays. Between wildlife parks, human-scale resorts and snowshoe outings, young and old alike find something to enjoy without having to drive for hours.

28. Visit a mountain wildlife park to get close to Pyrenean fauna, a safe bet with children.
29. Ski in the Ariège resorts (such as Ax 3 Domaines, Guzet or Les Monts d'Olmes) in winter, both alpine and cross-country.

How much time should you allow?

For a weekend, it is better to pick one area and not spread yourself too thin: for example the Foix area with the castle, the Labouiche underground river and a walk, or the Haute-Ariège with a cave, a hike and the thermal baths of Ax. For a week, you can combine the main themes — a day of nature, a day of prehistory, a day of heritage, a day of whitewater — alternating effort and relaxation. Distances look short on the map, but mountain roads are winding: always allow a little more travel time than expected.

Planning your trip well

A few useful habits: book cave visits in advance, as they are often in small groups; check opening periods, since many sites are seasonal; and adapt your plans to the weather, which is very changeable in the mountains. The tourist offices of the Foix area, the Haute-Ariège, the Couserans and the Mirepoix area are your best allies for up-to-date information.
